Dye Garden
These are some of the plants used in Georgia by the Cherokees prior to the Trail of Tears. Most dyes came from trees and shrubs.
- Black Walnut leaves……….Green (juglans nigra)
- Black Walnut husks…… Black (juglans nigra) also Smooth Sumac black berries
- Blood Root………………….. Red (Sanguinaria Canadensis) also Smooth Sumac red berries
- Yellow Root………………. Yellow (Zanthorhiza simplicissima) also yellow bark of apple trees, marigolds (tagetes erecta)
- Celedine Poppy flowers……Yellow
- Blackberry……………………..dark Purple, light pink to alkaline blue-grey
- Blueberry………………………dark Blue
- Wild Indigo……………………Blue (Paptista australis)
