Kitchen & Medicinal Bed
At the Kitchen/Medicinal Garden Bed we are growing Horseradish Root, Walking Onions, Oregano, Sage and Thyme.... all excellent choices for a flavorful and functional garden and which are all herbs that thrive in well-drained soil and full sun. Here's a bit more information about each of these herbs:
Horseradish is known for its diuretic properties, which can help the body expel toxins and has been used traditionally to treat conditions like sore throats, digestive upset, asthma, arthritis, and It's easy to grow from root pieces (thongs) or young plants, preferring a large container, sun or partial shade, and well-drained soil.
Wild onions are a significant and traditional food source for the Cherokee people, often foraged in the spring and used in various dishes, highlighting the importance of connecting with nature and preserving cultural traditions.
Oregano is used for its flavor in cooking and is also known for its potential health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Needs a warm, sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, either in the ground or a container.
Sage is a perennial herb with a slightly bitter, peppery flavor. Traditionally Cherokee's used sage, along with other herbs and plants, in smudging ceremonies for spiritual cleansing, purification, and to honor ancestors, and also for medicinal purposes to treat colds or coughs. Prefers full sun and well-draining soil, and can be started from transplants or seeds.
Thyme is a fragrant herb with a lemony, slightly earthy flavor that is commonly used in stews, sauces, and roasted dishes. Thrives in full sun, well-drained soil, and can be grown in containers or raised beds if soil is heavy or damp. Thyme leaves have been used as an antiseptic and in liquid form to treat bronchitis.
